Excerpts from news articles:
In 2000, The New York Times reported the war in Congo had cost 100,000 lives. Based on their work on the ground, the International Rescue Committee knew this was a gross underestimate. When they set out to get an accurate number, they discovered the grave reality: the Congo is by far the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II. Since 1998, 5.4 million people have died there. The death toll is the equivalent of an Asian Tsunami every 6.5 months. A September 11 every 2.5 days. And nearly half of the deaths in the Congo are of children under the age of five…read more
Buy a Mile!

I have started a ‘50 miles to Congo’ fund that goes to the Run for Congo Women organization. My goal is to raise $5000 for this cause which works out to $100 per mile. A generous one hundred dollar contribution will secure one mile from my run under your name. A list will be created showing who purchased which mile and I will bring this list with me during my run. After the race I will post the list of the contributors and the miles that they have purchased in the order in which the donations were made on this website. You can make any sized donation that you please. You may want to purchase a mile with some friends or maybe just a half or even quarter mile. The people in Congo survive on very little. Sponsoring a child for example, costs $35 per month so ant amount is helpful. On August 5, 2010 the list looked like this:

Mile 1 – Sally Fridy
Mile 2 – Sally Fridy
Mile 3 – Sally Fridy
Mile 4 – Sally Fridy
Mile 5 – Sally Fridy
Mile 6 – Gustavo Gutierrez
Mile 7 – Kevin Weaver
