Two Epidemics

Two Epidemics
We battle our own fat as they fight to survive.
Two different countries. Two different epidemics.

If we contrast the pictures of the obese people in our country with the displaced people of Congo how can we as Americans ever look at ourselves the same way? When looking at the two epidemics side by side a clear injustice is illustrated. Yet we can’t really fault ourselves for this, or can we? There are many reasons why we turn away from people in real need. It can be overwhelming to confront at first. I am not trying to “save the world” by creating this message. I just thought I should try to help others while I help myself. I actually discovered that sometimes caring about others (or at least making the attempt) is easier than caring about yourself. It can be the beginning of finding hope. Contribute to Congo

The fattest nation in world history
A few years ago I was 50 lbs over weight, just teetering on the verge of obesity. When my doctor told me this I was shocked. I knew I’d put on a few extra lbs. but me?… obese?? Eventually (not quickly) I decided to make a commitment to exercise and lose the weight. But then I’d gain it back. Like many Americans this became a challenge in my life.
After making the decision to run for Congo the pounds have come off and I don’t even really think about my weight any more. I think this is due to the fact that I am doing something for a greater good. I want other people to understand this principle and do the same. It feels great. It’s healthy. It works. |
Did you know that 5.4 million people have been killed in the past decade?
A death toll that sounds like a World War II statistic yet we don’t hear about this very often if at all in the news. If 5.4 million Americans or Europeans were killed in the past decade we most definitely would have heard about it, no? So why don’t we hear about Africa?…
There are many reasons for this – political, racial, economic. Frankly, I don’t know if I could even come close to explaining these reasons. I am an everyday American who has seen this in the periphery on TV for years. And for years, I would just think about how sad it was and then go back to what I was doing at the time. But I decided to change that and to make some kind of contribution… not a difficult thing to do I realized. And it actually makes me feel good.
The wars in Africa have displaced thousands of people. While many Americans eat themselves to death with obesity related health complications such as diabetes and heart disease, many people in Africa go without basic necessities like water, food and shelter. Contributing even in a small way can make a big difference to someone’s life. It can even help save a life.
